Average Client Retention Times

(In response to a question on the Co-Active Network regarding how long clients typically work with a coach and what to do when you run out of things to talk about,
this was my reply.)

Hi Rich.

As to average retention times with clients, it is all over the map. However, I can remember an ICF study of over 5400 coaches once showed that 83% of clients stay with you for over 3 months, and slightly more than 50% stay with you for over 6 months, and some will stay for years and years. As your confidence and competence as a coach grows, you should see your retention times grow as well.

Generally, I find it is common to run out of juice on one topic or a specific agenda item, but that is just an invitation to find another part of their life, career, relationship, health, etc, etc, where they have a challenge or an opportunity to make some meaningful change.

When the coaching gets a little dry, get them dreaming, get them going deeper, take them back to the wheel, or spread out the calls more so there is enough time for more good stuff to show up between conversations.

But also know that every client you ever have will, eventually, get what they needed, make the important changes, and depart. Don't take it personally. That is just how it is supposed to work.

As you get better focused and organized with your marketing you will hopefully reach a place where you attract enough clients to keep you as busy as you want to be. At that point, one client leaving just means you now have room in your practice to start a whole new journey with someone else who is meant to work with you.

Good luck,

Steve
